Hey there, I´m Amy, photographer, branding expert and collector of Typefaces

I’m a New York City and Hudson Valley based photographer specializing in portraits and headshots creating honest, storytelling images for corporate & editorial clients, businesses & personal branding, and film sets. With an eye for relationships and community, I bring a unique sensibility to my work.

My grandmother was one of my earliest influences. She was an artist and activist who taught me about aesthetic and creative process at a young age. Born on 11-11-11, she continues to inspire me.

After earning degrees in sociology and criminal justice, I spent ten years as a federal probation officer. Empowered by an overwhelming sense that I needed to turn a lifelong passion into a career, I became a professional photographer and never looked back. Photography has provided me with an avenue for creative storytelling and a powerful tool for capturing emotion.

As an advocate for diversity and inclusion and a visible member of the LGBTQ and allied business community, I feel passionately about human rights and social justice.

I love to travel and collect new experiences. I can also be found in the yoga studio, practicing Qigong, studying metaphysics, or creating abstract paintings. I never miss an opportunity to challenge the status quo.

ThreeTwelve Media is a company I co-own with my brilliant husband and partner, Josh.

Testimonials

Amy Mayes is a triple threat – a consummate professional, a joy and an inspiration to work with and a true artist.

When you work with Amy it’s a real collaboration. Once I outlined my project I sat back and watched her eyes light up and the wheels begin to turn. She asked all the right questions and many I had not thought to consider. She completely understood what the project entailed and what my vision was. She made sure every angle had been covered, every contingency accounted for and did the prep work like I have never seen. Every project involves stress. The one worry I did not have was photography. Amy far exceeded my expectations. If you want less worry and exceptional results, Amy is the answer.”

Kathleen Lynn

Director of Communications, North Shore Animal League America

Amy Mayes has an exceptional eye, with an even more exceptional heart.

She brings years of experience, coupled with a passion for her work and commitment to excellence, to every shoot. Amy understands style, lighting, and every shot needed. Her instincts are spot on, and her ability to capture both the planned and spontaneous moments make her a must-have photographer. Additionally, Amy’s commitments to supporting nonprofits means that your investment in her work trickles down to help countless others.

Amy photographed a marketing campaign for my pilates studio…

…including interiors of the space, headshots and candid and posed portraits. From start to finish Amy made the process easy, fun, and stress-free. With her creative solutions we were able to get beautiful shots with perfect lighting. Amy brings not only tremendous skill and expertise, but also a sense of humor, joy and great patience to her work, which is extremely helpful for those of us who are less comfortable in front of a camera. She put everyone at ease and a long day felt like it flew by. The finished photos were natural, beautiful and brought out the best in us and the studio space. We were beyond thrilled with the results!”

Amy Mayes is phenomenal in every sense of the word.

From the very beginning, working with her was beyond enjoyable, as she was reliable and engaged throughout the entire process. Amy took numerous headshots for our group. With each individual she made everyone feel confident and at ease and worked with them to capture a headshot that they were excited to use. Amy’s not only very talented but she’s a warm and passionate person, striving to capture her client’s vision. I would undoubtedly work with her in the future and highly recommend her for any project.

From start to finish Amy made my headshot experience both fun and effortless.

I felt completely at ease as she guided me through the entire experience, providing feedback and clear direction at each step. I loved the way she shared the photos with me during the shoot. She showed me how to best situate myself to ensure an optimal position for the most flattering look. I’m thrilled with the results! Amy is personable, professional and most of all passionate about her work. I highly recommend her!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

Studio shoots take place at a photo studio in Astoria, NY (Queens).  It’s a short walk from the N/W 36th Street Subway stop (3 stops from Manhattan).

We have an office in Long Island City, NY (Queens) at the historic Cigar Factory.  Please note photos shoots do not take place at this location.

On location shoots take place indoors or outdoors in the NYC Metropolitan area, Upstate New York and everywhere in between.

Are you willing to travel?

Absolutely.  Let’s discuss.

How does your pricing structure work?

Fees vary based on size, scope, and duration of the shoot, plus the number of final retouched images needed.  Estimates can be requested by filling out our contact form.  Once we get your message, we’ll likely set up a call so we can further discuss your project and answer any additional questions you may have.  It’s always helpful to connect offline to discuss details.

Who are your clients?

We work with large corporations, small to mid-size businesses, production companies, non-profits, and individual clients.

What services do you offer to your corporate and business clients:

Headshots, executive portraits, team portraits, event coverage, and images for marketing materials, websites, and annual reports.

What are my background options for headshots?

Background options include solid color backdrops or we can create a background using the environment.

What should I wear?

As a general rule, try to stay away from bright colors and busy patterns.  I’m always happy to help you decide what looks best for the most flattering look.  Wardrobe changes are easy at the studio.

Do you work with a professional hair and make-up artist or stylist?

Yes!  I’m happy to put you in touch with my preferred artists who are available for a consultation with you prior to our shoot.

How do I prepare for my shoot?

Get a good night’s rest and show up on time.  That’s’ it.

I help guide and pose you every step of the way.  You won’t have to think about a thing.

What are you doing before and after our shoot?

Here’s a basic rundown:

Pre-production includes a discussion about your marketing, communications and/or PR needs and your brand/style.  This is where my creative and technical planning begins.  I’ll conduct a location scout (if needed), prep gear and lighting, and produce a schedule for our shoot.

Post-production may include creating a proofing gallery from our shoot (for non-studio work), carefully culling through our images and providing you with the best options.  The images you select from your proofing gallery will be carefully retouched.

What’s the turnaround time for my final retouched images?

Turnaround time for delivery of proofing galleries and retouched images will be determined based on the size and scope of the shoot.  Extra fees apply for expedited images.

For more information about your specific project, please complete the contact form and your message will be returned shorty.

How are my final retouched images formatted?

I’ll deliver both high-resolution images for printing and web-optimized images for digital use.  Images will be delivered in a password-protected online galley for downloading.
